With the aim of ensuring Delivery of Quality Services to the customers, the Institute embarked on the journey to certification by setting ISO certification as a performance target. As part of Management's commitment, a steering committee to oversee ISO activities in the Institute was appointed and a Alpex Consulting Africa Limited (ACAL) was selected through a competitive process to be the consultant to provide guidance.

To ensure that management and staffs own the process and are capable of developing and documenting the QMS processes and procedures, training and awareness was done at three levels: Top Management sensitization, QMS implementers training and general awareness for all members of staff. In addition, a special sensitization session for all students was held.

In April 2010, the momentum towards certification picked up when the ISO 9001:2008 certification dream team was trained and the Management Representative appointed. In the same month, the dream team, guided by the consultant, undertook a thorough process of gap analysis and to develop and document departmental quality procedures. A lead auditor was also trained. This paved way for the official launch of the Institutes QMS based on ISO 9001:2008 on 18th October 2010. This was followed by the training of 25 Internal Quality Auditors (IQA) in November, 2010. This paved way for the first Internal Audit in March 2011.

Having demonstrated the capacity to maintain the ISO 9001:2008 QMS, Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) decided that the Institute should be certified with effect from 18th July 2011. The Journey to ISO 9001:2008 Certification has not only led to certification but has also enhanced the team spirit among all staff members in the institute.
